San Jose, call to action

Support Workplace Safety: Call your legislator to support AB 815
AB 815 by Assemblywoman Sally Lieber will close the gap between workplace and environmental regulations so that workers are as safe on the job as they are in their homes and communities. Cal/EPA already sets standards for environmental exposure to many chemicals, but there are some toxic chemicals that workers may legally be exposed to in the workplace. 15 chemicals that are known to the state to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity are simply not regulated in the workplace. This legislation addresses this disparity. Let your legislator know that you support this bill by calling them at their office.

The Iraqi Labor Movement and the US Occupation
Learn from two officers of the General Union of Oil Workers in Basrah what the occupation has meant for working people and the labor movement. Hassan Juma'a Awad Al Asada and Faleh Abbood Umara will speak and answer questions on: How the US still enforces Saddam Hussein's 1987 law banning unions for most Iraqi workers. How workers have successfully resisted privatization of Iraqi workplaces. Why the oil workers' union calls for an immediate end to occupation and for dismantling of all military bases. Join us as we learn how the occupation has affected their lives and what we can do to support them.

Another day in paradise

Tower Hall SJSU

Great Rally on May 11th!

From CSUEU Administrator Virginia Watts:
Great Rally on May 11th! 70 + CSUEU members volunteered their own time to journey to the Chancellor's Office to the Board of Trustees and demand Raises, Rights, Respect! And there were many other rallies with hundreds of CSUEU and CFA employees on campuses to support our cause.

Here's the message: "As reopener bargaining begins CSUEU employees will not be passed over again. We are essential to the mission of the CSU and we need appropriate compensation for the crucial services we provide.

We are the first-line employees who meet, greet, and facilitate student access to the University. We are doing more and more with less and less. Don't use our salary savings to redecorate offices, provide adminstrative perks, or new buildings. Support your staff, or we won't be able to support you."

See our website soon for pics and quotes. Stay tuned -- there's much more to follow.

Strike Averted

Bargaining Update May 11: Tentative Agreement Reached!  - Strike Averted

Great news!! We have reached a tentative agreement with the University and have therefore called off the Unfair Labor Practice strike scheduled for Thursday, May 12th.

The agreement is contingent on ratification by our members and the CSU Trustees. We will begin the process of ratification immediately, which consists of a meeting at which members can discuss the tentative agreement and a vote on whether to approve the agreement. We will send out the details of the ratification process for each campus in a separate email.

We appreciate all of your support, organizing efforts and commitment. This is a historic first agreement for our unit and it would not have been possible without the hard work and support of our membership.

In Solidarity,

The CAASE/UAW Bargaining Committee

Strike tomorrow at SJSU?

From Union HQ:
UAW may be on strike tomorrow, May 12th, at our campuses. While CSUEU strongly supports our UAW brothers and sisters, our contract prohibits us from participating in any strike activity during work hours.

CSUEU represented employees may participate in picket lines on their own time should they choose to do so. They also may use personal time to join with the strikers or refuse to cross the picket line.

Let your conscious be your guide. If you have any questions, please call our HQ’s office at 916/319-4800.
